We live in a culture that, under ordinary circumstances, routinely and tacitly denies death. We don’t like to talk about it. We can’t even bring ourselves to say it, most of the time: he didn’t die, he “passed away.” Or he “went on to a better place.” It’s undeniably stark to state outright that someone has died. We don’t even like to admit it at funerals – we so often hold a “celebration of life” instead. As my husband sometimes says… “Wait, who put the fun in funeral?” We avoid thinking about our friends’ deaths, or our family members’ deaths, or – heaven forbid – our own deaths, preferring instead to fill our time with work and entertainment and living as if we will never die.
